Expanding the series of Audio Product Education Institute webinars focusing on Supply Chain & Sourcing, this new event jumps directly to the factory floor and focuses on the very specific production line challenges. In this new online event, our two supply chain and sourcing experts, David Lindberg (DB Enterprises) and Mike Klasco (Menlo Scientific) have invited two companies who play a key role in that space. Anna-Katrina Shedletsky, the co-founder of Instrumental will explain how her company helps to solve complex production line challenges when building products. And Daniel Knighten, General Manager, and Eric Hodges, Director of Marketing and Sales Operations for Audio Precision, will explain how a new integrated audio test system helps with quality assessments, reducing setup and reconfiguration time.

And detecting and solving problems and inefficiencies in the factory floor is key to consistently successful product strategies. Launching new products is being challenged by compressed timelines, and dramatically increasing engineering complexity. 20% of every dollar spent in manufacturing alone is wasted on things like scrap, rework, product returns, mistakes, experiments, and underutilized human resources. This webinar will offer two valuable perspectives from executives with extensive experience in this field, while exploring cutting-edge products and solutions for the production line.
In the first presentation from Anna-Katrina Shedletsky, we will learn how Instrumental uses artificial intelligence (AI) to discover, root cause, and eliminate defects in development and production. Large audio manufacturers such as Bose, and many consumer electronics companies trust in Instrumental to accelerate product development timelines and improve production yields of their audio products by using AI to aggregate and analyze all of their product data to resolve even the most complex issues. The presentation will highlight examples of audio devices, and how Instrumental’s software helps root cause issues with key components such as speakers, microphones and antennas.
The second presentation will detail how the latest Audio Precision APx517B acoustic audio analyzer, developed specifically with the manufacturing environment in mind, can be conveniently and efficiently adapted for different test strategies. Integrating a power amplifier, microphone power supply, and analyzer required for the testing of speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, and the wide range of consumer electronics incorporating speakers and microphones, the APx517B can save time in the overall test process through reduced setup and configuration steps.
The presentation will also explore manufacturing test strategies for audio products, managing variables for both “cost of test” and “cost of failure.” The goal of a manufacturing test is to ensure that the products manufactured, and ultimately shipped to retail or directly to customers, meet the design specifications and perform as intended. Unfortunately, uncontrolled variability or tolerances in materials and manufacturing processes can directly, and negatively, impact the ability to achieve this goal. So, the fundamental question is: What is the most effective way to test products to ensure they meet specification?
After the presentations, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions to the pillar chairs and the presenters. Topics such as the pandemic challenges on the production chain and broken supply chains will be addressed, as well as finding and selecting manufacturing partners in different regions of the globe, the manufacturing reliance on China, and foreseeable challenges and misalignments in electronics manufacturing.

As General Manager of Audio Precision, Dan Knighten oversees the development, engineering, and manufacturing of AP analyzers, software, and accessories. He is also the primary product planner, providing the vision to define the features, functions, and performance of new products and solutions.
He joined Audio Precision in the year 2000 and in the ensuing 21 years has worked behind the scenes with all the leading consumer electronics companies on many of the most exciting and revolutionary audio products that now define our lives in the 21st century.
In his free time, and given fair weather, Dan can be found cycling to work or putting his private pilot’s license to good use in the skies around Portland and the Pacific Northwest.
Eric Hodges

Eric serves as the Director of Marketing and Sales Operations for Audio Precision. Eric is directly responsible for AP’s marketing strategy development and implementation, covering everything from advertising, web development, brand management, email marketing, public relations, tradeshows, events, product launches and the content development process.
Prior to joining AP, Eric’s 18 years as a marketing professional have been exclusively in the high-tech industry, across applications as varied as microelectronics, broadcast & entertainment, and test & measurement.
Anna-Katrina Shedletsky

CEO and Founder of Instrumental Mountain View, California, USA

Anna-Katrina Shedletsky is the CEO and founder of Instrumental, a manufacturing data company that uses machine learning to find anomalies on consumer electronics assembly lines. She has two degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, and went on to work as a Product Design Engineer at Apple. During her six years there, she designed mechanical components for three iPods and led system product design for the Apple Watch Series 1. After spending over 300 days in China finding and fixing issues on manufacturing lines, she started Instrumental to build an intelligent quality system to modernize manufacturing. Instrumental customers range from startups to Fortune 500s and span consumer electronics, apparel and more.
Anna-Katrina frequently travels to China to lead and support engineering builds, speaks Chinese, and recently founded the Women in STEM Mentorship Program.

Dave is a factory savvy marketing professional with strengths in selling early stage innovative technologies for consumer electronic devices, medical, industrial and textiles. Based in Asia since 2008, Dave holds a unique perspective on supply chain, having sold technologies and solutions to factories in China and across Asia, connecting brands with suppliers, sourcing key suppliers for manufacturers, or coordinating entire product development projects for select customers.

Mike Klasco

CEO, Menlo Scientific, Richmond, California, USA

Mike Klasco is the president of Menlo Scientific, an audio consulting firm for the loudspeaker industry, located in Richmond, CA. He is a graduate from New York University, with post graduate work in signal processing, and he holds multiple patents licensed or assigned. For the past 35 years, since founding Menlo Scientific, he has worked on product development, design and technical support, liaison between suppliers and manufacturing facilities, sourcing guidance, and certification for a large number of companies. Mike specializes in materials and fabrication techniques to enhance audio performance, has over 500 articles published in audio magazines and technical journals, and to this day continues to be a regular contributor for audioXpress and Voice Coil magazines. He presented papers at the Acoustical Society of America, held positions as Session Organizer for the Audio Engineering Society, Chairman of the Committee on Acoustics, and is an AES Life Member.
